Pro-spective by Jeff Thomsen

If we were having a business discussion, invariably we would discuss the 80/20 Rule or the Rule of 72.

The 80/20 Rule states that 80 percent of your business revenue comes from 20 percent of your clients. The Rule of 72 tells you to divide the intended rate of return into 72, which will tell you how long it takes for your investment to double.

Letīs apply the Rule of 72 to your golf game.

Putting is 44 percent of your score regardless of what that score is. All golf shots that occur within 100 yards of the hole are 65 percent of your score. Tee shots (14 per round, not including par-3s) are 20 percent of your golf score if your total score is 70.

Forty-four percent putting plus 21 percent all non-putting shots less than 100 yards plus 20 percent tee shots gives you this total: 85 percent of your golf game is based on putting, chipping, pitching, bunker shots and all types of shots less than 100 yards, plus tee shots.

Now we have a balance between the 80/20 Rule and the Rule of 72. Spend 80 percent of your practice time on these key areas of the game and you will see a marked improvement in your game.

By concentrating time and effort on key areas of the game of golf that are the most important in terms of score, we have a high rate of return for our effort.
